Why do I get "Can't open file" when backing up my Quicken data file to a CD?

If you see a Can't open file message while trying to back up your Quicken data file to a CD, it usually means the CD hasn't been properly formatted for file storage.

Writable CDs often require formatting by disc-burning software before files can be saved to them directly. If the CD is not formatted or has been closed (finalized) by another program, Quicken won’t be able to write to it.

Recommended workaround

To avoid this issue, back up your file to your hard drive first, then copy it to the CD using your disc-burning software:

  1. In Quicken, select File > Backup and Restore > Back up Quicken File.

  2. Choose a folder on your hard drive (such as Documents\Quicken Backup) as the backup location.

  3. Complete the backup.

  4. Open your disc-burning software and copy the backup file to the CD.

Note: For convenience and long-term reliability, consider using Quicken Online Backup or a cloud storage folder like Dropbox, OneDrive, or Google Drive.
