How do I figure out where my Quicken data file is?

Quicken data files have a .QDF extension and are typically stored in your Documents > Quicken folder. However, if you've moved your file or are unsure of its location, use the methods below to locate it.

If Quicken is installed and running

1. Use the File menu to view recent files

  1. Open Quicken.

  2. Select File from the menu bar.

  3. Review the list of recently opened files at the bottom of the menu. The currently open file is marked with a checkmark.

This method is useful if you've recently accessed the file and haven't moved or renamed it.

2. Show the file location in File Explorer

  1. With your data file open in Quicken, select File > Show this file on my computer.

  2. File Explorer will open, highlighting the folder containing your .QDF file.

This is the most direct way to locate the file you're currently working with.

3. Search for data files within Quicken

  1. Select File > Find Quicken Files.

  2. Choose to search for all Quicken data files or enter part of the file name using an asterisk (*) as a wildcard (e.g., *2024*).

  3. Select the drive or folder to search in.

  4. Click Search.

  5. In the Data Files Found window, select the desired file and click Open File.

Use this method if you have multiple data files or are unsure of the file name.

If Quicken is not installed or accessible

Use Windows Search

  1. Press Windows + S to open the search bar.

  2. Type .QDF and press Enter.

  3. Review the search results for your Quicken data files.

This method helps locate .QDF files across your system.

Additional tips

  • Avoid opening files directly from the BACKUP folder. Restore them properly using Quicken's restore feature to ensure data integrity.

  • Store your active data file on a local drive. Avoid using cloud-synced folders (e.g., OneDrive, Dropbox) for active files to prevent potential data corruption.

  • Regularly back up your data. Use Quicken's backup feature to create copies of your data file in a secure location.
