What if Quicken backs up the wrong data file?

Quicken always backs up the data file that is currently open. If you're working in the wrong file, your backup may not include the information you expect. You can avoid this by making sure the correct file is open before you create a backup. If you're not sure which file you need, Quicken can help you find it.

Step 1: Identify the file you want to back up

If you're not sure which file you need:

  1. Open Quicken.

  2. Select File > Find Quicken Files.

  3. Review the list to locate the correct file. Take note of the file name and location.

Step 2: Open the correct data file

Once you've identified the correct file:

  1. Select File > Open Quicken File.

  2. Browse to the file location you noted earlier.

  3. Select the file and click Open.

You’ll now be working in the correct file.

Step 3: Create a backup

To create a backup of the file now open:

  1. Select File > Backup and Restore > Back up Quicken File.

  2. Follow the prompts to complete the backup.
