How to open an existing data file

Quicken automatically opens the last data file you used. If you want to work with a different file, you need to open it manually. Quicken can open only one data file at a time.

Open a different data file

  1. Select File > Open Quicken File.

  2. In the file browser, go to the folder where your data file is stored. By default, Quicken shows the folder that contains your current file.

  3. Select the file you want to open, or type its name in the File name field.

  4. Select OK.

To search for a file on your computer, select Find Quicken Files.

Other ways to open a data file

In addition to using the File menu, you can open a file using one of the following methods:

Use the recent file list

  1. Select File from the menu bar.

  2. Choose a file from the list at the bottom of the file menu.

This method is available only if the file was opened recently and hasn't been moved or deleted.

Open the file from Windows File Explorer

  1. Open File Explorer and go to the folder that contains your .QDF file.

  2. Double-click the file to open it in Quicken.

This method works only if .QDF files are associated with Quicken in Windows.

Use a desktop shortcut (if you have one)

  1. Double-click a shortcut to the .QDF file.

This method is useful if you regularly switch between multiple files.

Warning

Do not open files directly from the BACKUP folder. These files must be restored before use and may not contain the most recent information.
