Viewing security quotes and market value graphs using Security Detail

You can use the Security Detail window to check a security’s current price and recent performance, verify that the market value in your portfolio matches the latest quote, and review the transactions that make up your position. It’s useful when you want to research a holding, confirm your cost basis and gain for that security, or troubleshoot changes in your investment account’s value.

Open the Security Detail window

You can open Security Detail from the holdings list in the Portfolio view.

  1. Open the Investing view, and then click the Portfolio tab.

  2. In the holdings list, select the security you want.

  3. In the menu that appears, click Security Detail.

The Security Detail window shows a snapshot of your position and the latest quote information for the selected security.

Undestanging the Security Detail window

Use these short definitions to understand the fields you see in My Holdings, Security Details, and Quote.

My Holdings terms

  • Shares Held: The number of shares you currently own for the selected security.

  • Market Value: The current value of your shares, based on the latest price (shares × price).

  • Cost Basis: What you paid for the shares you still own, including transaction costs when available.

  • Gain: The difference between Market Value and Cost Basis (positive or negative).

  • % Change: The percentage price change for the security for the period shown (commonly the latest quote change).

  • Avg. Cost per Share: Your Cost Basis divided by Shares Held.

Security Details terms

  • Name: The security’s name (for example, the company name or fund name).

  • Symbol: The ticker symbol used to identify the security in quotes (for example, AAPL).

  • Type: The kind of security (for example, stock, mutual fund, ETF, or bond).

  • Asset Class: A category used to group investments by what they are (for example, stocks, bonds, or cash).

Quote terms

  • Date as of: The date and time the displayed quote information applies to.

  • Price: The most recent trading price shown for the security.

  • Change: How much the Price changed since the previous close.

  • % Change: The Change expressed as a percentage of the previous close.

  • Open: The price when the market opened for the day.

  • Prev Close: The price when the market closed on the previous trading day.

  • High: The highest trading price for the day.

  • Low: The lowest trading price for the day.

  • Volume: The number of shares traded during the day.

  • 52-week High: The highest trading price during the last 52 weeks.

  • 52-week Low: The lowest trading price during the last 52 weeks.

Change the graph time period

The market value graph updates based on the time period you select.

  1. In the Security Detail window, find the graph controls above the chart.

  2. Click the time range you want:

    • YYTD: Shows price movement from the start of the current calendar year through today.

    • 1w: Shows price movement for the last 7 days.

    • 1m: Shows price movement for the last month.

    • 3m: Shows price movement for the last 3 months.

    • 6m: Shows price movement for the last 6 months.

    • 1y: Shows price movement for the last year.

    • 3y: Shows price movement for the last 3 years.

    • 5y: Shows price movement for the last 5 years.

    • 10y: Shows price movement for the last 10 years.

    • Max: Shows the longest available price history for the security (based on the price data Quicken can access or that you’ve stored in Price History).

View transaction history for the security

The Transaction History list shows transactions for the selected security across your investment accounts.

  • Review columns such as Date, Account, Action, Shares, Price, and Amount.

Switch to a different security

You can change which security you’re viewing without leaving the window.

  1. At the top-left of the Security Detail window, click the security name pop-up menu.

  2. Select a different security.

Update quotes and open News & Analysis

The buttons in the upper-right corner let you refresh data or open additional market information.

  • Click Update to refresh/download the latest quote data.

  • Click News & Analysis to open a browser window with additional quote, chart, and analysis content for the selected security.

Edit security details and price history

From Security Detail, you can open an editor with Security Details and Price History tabs.

  1. In the Security Detail window, in the Security Details section, click Edit.

  2. To change security info, click Security Details, and then review or update fields such as Security Name, Type, Symbol, This security is tax-exempt, and Show in Watchlist.

  3. To view or maintain historical prices, click Price History:

    1. Choose a Date.

    2. Enter values such as Opening Price, Closing Price (required), High, Low, and Volume.

    3. Click Add.

    4. Optional: Click Rebuild History... or Import History From CSV File....

  4. Click Save.
