Adding income

Using Quicken, you can record income earned from a security you already own, such as a dividend paid by a stock or interest paid on a bond. When you record this income, Quicken adds it to your account's cash balance. If you'd rather use the income to buy more shares of the same security, you can reinvest it instead.

Quicken tracks the following types of investment income:

  • Dividend: A payment a company makes to shareholders, usually from its earnings.

  • Interest: Income paid on an interest-bearing security, such as a bond or a money market fund.

  • Long-term capital gain: A distribution representing profit from securities a fund held for more than one year.

  • Short-term capital gain: A distribution representing profit from securities a fund held for one year or less.

  • Miscellaneous: Investment income that doesn't fit any of the categories above.

Each topic explains how to record that type of income and, where applicable, how to reinvest it instead of depositing it as cash.
