Update your cryptocurrency securities for accurate pricing
Quicken supports automatic price downloads for cryptocurrency. If you were tracking crypto holdings before this support was added, your existing securities may need to be updated to take advantage of it. Specifically, the security type needs to be set to Cryptocurrency and the symbol needs to be in the correct format -- for example, BTCUSD instead of BTC.
Until these updates are made, Quicken may display incorrect or missing prices for those holdings.
How to tell if a security needs updating
A security needs updating if it represents a cryptocurrency and its type is set to anything other than Cryptocurrency. This is common with securities imported from brokerages such as Robinhood or Coinbase, which often provide crypto holdings with incomplete symbols (such as BTC or ETH instead of BTCUSD or ETHUSD).
Update the security type and symbol
Choose Window > Securities to open the Securities list.
Find the cryptocurrency you want to update and double-click it to open the Edit Security window.
In the Type field, select Cryptocurrency. Quicken automatically sets the Asset Class to Cryptocurrency as well.
Click in the Symbol field and type the name or symbol of the cryptocurrency -- for example, BTC or Bitcoin. A dropdown appears showing matching results.
Select the correct entry from the list. Quicken fills in the symbol in the supported format automatically -- for example, BTCUSD for Bitcoin priced in US dollars.
Click Save.
Repeat these steps for each cryptocurrency security that needs updating.
Review and fix price history
Because the security previously had an incorrect type or symbol, its stored price history may be inaccurate. After updating the security, review the price history and remove any incorrect entries before rebuilding.
Double-click the security to open the Edit Security window.
Click the Price History tab and review the listed prices.
If you need to remove incorrect prices:
To delete all prices, press Command-A to select all entries, then click – (minus) at the bottom left.
To delete specific prices, click each incorrect entry (hold Command to select multiple), then click – (minus).
Click Rebuild History. Quicken downloads accurate price history from the cryptocurrency data source.
Click Save.
If you have manually entered prices that you know are correct, leave those in place and remove only the entries that appear inaccurate.
Things to know
If a cryptocurrency doesn't appear in the symbol dropdown, try searching by its full name instead. For example, Bitcoin.
If a security you expect to see isn't in the Securities list, check that your investment account is set to detailed tracking. Simple investment tracking accounts do not support cryptocurrency.
For tax purposes, each sale of cryptocurrency may be a taxable event. Quicken tracks your cost basis and gain or loss per transaction, which you can review in investment reports. Consult a tax professional for advice specific to your situation.
