Updating share prices
Updating share prices
Quicken helps you keep your investment values accurate by updating security prices in one of three ways: automatic updates, manual updates, or imported price history. You can also rebuild or overwrite price data when needed. This topic explains each method in detail, including how to control update frequency and enter or replace prices when automatic quotes aren't available.
Update Method | Best For | How It Works | User Control | Requires Internet? |
---|---|---|---|---|
Automatic updates | Users who want up-to-date prices without effort | Quicken downloads eligible prices every 60 minutes in the background | Controlled through Settings | Yes |
Manual updates | Users who want control over when prices are updated | Click Update Quotes in any portfolio view to download latest prices on demand | Fully manual | Yes |
Manual entry | Securities without online quote support or specific historical price entry | Enter prices directly in the Price History tab of a security | Full control over dates and values | No |
Import from CSV | Uploading price history from another source | Use Import history from CSV file in the security’s Options menu | Controlled by the contents of the file | No |
Rebuild history | Fixing corrupted or inconsistent price history | Use Rebuild history to overwrite or retain existing prices | Partial control via checkboxes | Yes |
Automatically update investment prices
Quicken can download current prices for supported securities every 60 minutes while the app is open. This setting is controlled in the Connected Services tab.
Turn on automatic updates
Choose Quicken > Settings.
Click the Connected Services tab.
Under Downloaded Transactions, select Automatically update investment quotes every 60 minutes.
With this setting enabled, Quicken retrieves updated market prices in the background without requiring manual action.
Turn off automatic updates
Choose Quicken > Settings.
Click the Connected Services tab.
Deselect Automatically update investment quotes every 60 minutes.
When this setting is off, Quicken does not download price data unless you initiate an update manually.
Manually update investment prices
Manual updates give you control over when Quicken retrieves quote data. This is useful when you want to refresh your portfolio view on demand.
Download quotes manually
Click the Investing tab.
Choose any Portfolio view.
Click the Update Quotes button above the transaction list.
This downloads the latest available prices for the securities displayed in the selected portfolio.
You can use this option even if automatic updates are turned on.
Enter prices manually
Use this method when a security isn’t eligible for download or when entering historical values.
Choose Window > Securities.
Double-click the security you want to update.
Click the Price History tab.
Enter the Closing Price (required). You may also enter the high, low, and volume values.
Click Add to save the entry.
Click Done when finished.
The Closing Price is the final trading price for the day and is used for portfolio value calculations.
Rebuild price history
You can clear and replace price data for a security by using the rebuild tool. This option downloads a clean set of prices and gives you the choice to keep or discard existing entries.
Choose Window > Securities.
Double-click the security.
Click Options > Rebuild history.
Choose your rebuild options:
Do not update Quotes that I entered manually – Keeps any prices you entered yourself.
Do not delete quotes that cannot be replaced with downloaded values – Retains older prices or entries from unsupported dates.
Click Rebuild.
Leave both options selected to preserve the most existing data. Deselect both to fully replace the security’s price history.
Import price history from a CSV file
You can upload historical price data from another source using a CSV (Comma-Separated Values) file. This is useful if you're migrating from another system or have a record of prices to backfill.
Import a CSV file
Choose Window > Securities.
Double-click the security you want to update.
Click the Options button and select Import history from CSV file.
Follow the prompts to complete the import.
Larger files with years of data may take a minute or more to process.
CSV format requirements
Your file must include a date and closing price per entry. You may optionally include high, low, and volume values.
