Quicken Mac Help

Customize how money market funds are tracked

Some investment accounts include eligible money market funds that Quicken treats as cash instead of separate investment holdings.

If that does not match how your brokerage represents the fund, you can change it to Track as a Position. This can help your cash balance and holdings better match the account at your brokerage.

When to use this setting

Consider tracking a fund as a position when:

  • Your Quicken cash balance does not match the brokerage account

  • The money market fund is missing from your holdings

  • You want the fund’s shares and value shown separately in your portfolio

How it works

Eligible money market funds are treated as cash by default.

  • Treat as Cash — The fund is included in the account’s cash balance and does not appear as a separate holding

  • Track as a Position — The fund appears as a separate holding with shares and value

Change a fund’s tracking method

  1. Open the investment account

  2. Choose Account Settings

  3. Select the Downloads tab

  4. In the Money Market Fund Tracking section, select Customize.

  5. Select the checkbox to Treat as Cash, or clear it to Track as a Position

  6. Select Next

  7. Choose the cash balance Quicken should use:

    • Adjust cash balance for fund changes — Updates cash to reflect funds now treated as cash or positions

    • Keep current cash balance — Use this if the current cash balance is already correct

    • Enter a different cash balance — Use this if you know the correct cash balance to use

  8. Select Next, review the changes, then select Confirm

  9. Select Done

Quicken shows the resulting cash balance and share changes before making them.

Changing a fund back to cash

If you later change a fund from Track as a Position back to Treat as Cash, Quicken removes the placeholder entries it created for that position.

It may also permanently remove Buy, Sell, Add Shares, and Remove Shares transactions for that fund. For reinvest transactions, Quicken keeps the income amount but removes the related reinvested-share purchase. Changing the setting again will not restore removed transactions.

Before selecting Confirm, check the displayed cash balance, share balances, and any warnings about transactions that will be removed or changed.

Eligible funds

Only funds supported by your financial institution connection appear in this setting. Eligibility can vary by financial institution, account, and fund. You cannot manually add other securities to the list.
