Overview
In the Net Worth dashboard, the Breakdown panel shows how your current assets or debts are distributed across account types.
Use it to answer questions such as:
-
Where are most of my assets held?
-
How much of my financial position is held in cash, investments, retirement accounts, property, or other assets?
-
Which types of debt make up most of what I owe?
-
Is my financial position concentrated in one asset or debt category?
The Breakdown panel shows your current financial composition. To see how a balance changed over time, use the chart at the top of the Net Worth Dashboard.
Review Your Asset Breakdown
In the Breakdown panel, select Assets to see how your total assets are divided among account types.
Depending on your accounts, asset categories may include:
-
Cash & Checking
-
Savings
-
Brokerage
-
Retirement
-
Property
-
Vehicle
-
Other assets
Use the asset breakdown to answer:
-
Where are most of my assets held?
-
How much is held in cash compared with investments?
-
What portion of my assets is held in retirement accounts?
-
Is a large part of my financial position tied to property or other less-liquid assets?
-
Are my assets diversified across several categories or concentrated in one?
The Breakdown panel describes how your assets are distributed. It does not determine whether a particular allocation is appropriate for your goals.
Review Your Debt Breakdown
Select Debt to see how your total debt is divided among liability types.
Depending on your accounts, debt categories may include:
-
Credit Cards
-
Mortgage
-
Vehicle Loan
-
Other Loans
-
Other Liabilities
Use the debt breakdown to answer:
-
Which type of debt makes up most of what I owe?
-
How much of my debt comes from credit cards?
-
Are loans or other liabilities the largest part of my debt?
-
Is my debt concentrated in one category?
The size of a debt category does not show its interest rate, required payment, or repayment priority. Review the underlying account details when deciding which debt requires attention.
View Dollar Amounts or Percentages
Use the $ / % toggle to change how the Breakdown panel displays each category.
-
Select $ to view the balance of each category as a dollar amount.
-
Select % to view each category as a percentage of your total assets or total debt.
Dollar amounts help you understand the actual value of each category. Percentages make it easier to compare categories of different sizes and identify concentration.
For example, the dollar view can show how much you currently hold in retirement accounts. The percentage view can show how much of your total assets those accounts represent.
Compare the Breakdown with the Trend Chart
The Breakdown panel and trend chart answer different questions:
-
The trend chart shows how your net worth, assets, debt, or account types changed over time.
-
The Breakdown panel shows how your assets or debts are distributed now.
If the Breakdown panel shows that retirement accounts make up most of your assets, use Assets > Retirement in the chart to see how that category changed during the selected period.
If credit cards make up a significant portion of your debt, use Debt > Credit Cards to review the trend and identify which accounts contributed to the balance.
If a Category Looks Incorrect
If an asset or debt category appears incomplete or unexpected:
-
Confirm that the appropriate accounts are included in the Net Worth Dashboard.
-
Make sure connected accounts have been updated.
-
Review the current values of manually tracked assets and liabilities.
-
Confirm that each account is assigned to the appropriate account type.
Only accounts included in the Net Worth Dashboard appear in the Breakdown panel.
Examples
See How Much of Your Assets Is Readily Available
Maria’s asset breakdown shows that most of her assets are held in retirement and property accounts, while only a small percentage is held in Cash & Checking and Savings. Her overall net worth may be growing, but the breakdown helps her recognize that a smaller portion of her assets is readily available for short-term needs. She can review the dollar amounts in her cash and savings accounts to decide whether they align with her goals.
Understand What Makes Up Your Debt
Jordan sees a large total debt balance and wants to understand what is behind it. In the Breakdown panel, he selects Debt and switches to the percentage view. He sees that most of his debt comes from his mortgage, while credit cards represent a much smaller portion. The breakdown gives him context before he reviews the balances, interest rates, and payment terms of the individual accounts.
Investigate a Change in Your Asset Mix
Sam notices that brokerage accounts now represent a larger percentage of his assets than they did previously. Because the Breakdown panel shows only his current asset distribution, he uses the chart menu at the top of the dashboard and selects Assets > Brokerage. The trend chart helps him determine whether the change came from growth in his brokerage accounts or declines in other asset categories.
