Quicken Windows Help

Customize the register

You can change many aspects of the Quicken register to suit your own way of working. For example, you can change which columns are shown, the order they appear in, the font that is used, and the way transactions are sorted.

Change the way my register works

  1. Choose Edit menu > Preferences.

  2. In the left pane, click Register, Data Entry and QuickFill, Notify, Write Checks, Downloaded transactions, or Transfer Detection.

  3. In the right pane, make the changes you want. If you need additional assistance understanding the available choices, see the register preferences topic.

  4. Click OK to save your changes.

Notes

These settings don't work for investment accounts. An investment account transaction list works differently than a register.

Change the font and font size used in registers

  1. Choose Edit menu > Preferences.

  2. In the left pane, click Register.

  3. In the right pane, click Fonts.

  4. Select the font family and size you want to use in your registers and lists.

Notes

Keep the following in mind when you change register fonts.

  • Preview an example of the font at the bottom of the dialog.

  • Choose Reset to return to the default Quicken font setting.

  • These settings won't work for investment accounts. An investment account transaction list works differently than a register.

  • If you want the majority of text in Quicken to be larger, choose View menu > Use Large Fonts. The minimum recommended display resolution for large fonts is 1280x800.

Change the columns that display in the register

You can choose which columns appear in a non-investment register.

  1. Display the register that you want to change.

  2. At the top right of the column headings, click the Column Selector icon columnselector.png .

  3. Select the columns that you want to display in the register.

  4. Click Done.

Notes

Column selection works on a register-by-register basis.

  • You can also open the column list by clicking the Account Actions gear icon registergear.png and choosing Register columns.

  • This feature is available in non-investment registers only.

  • Each non-investment register can have its own column settings.

  • The columns available to choose from change based on account type and one- or two-line display status.

  • You can't clear the Date column from the register.

Rearrange the register columns

You can set the order in which columns appear in a non-investment register. Each register keeps its own column order.

  1. Display the register you want to change.

  2. At the top right of the column headings, click the Column Selector icon columnselector.png .

  3. In the column list, click the name of the column you want to move.

  4. Click Up or Down. Each click moves the column one position.

  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for any other columns you want to move.

  6. Click Done.

Notes

A few conditions affect which columns you can move and how far.

  • Up and Down are the only way to change column order. You can't drag a column heading to a new position.

  • Action buttons always appears last and can't be moved. Both buttons are unavailable when you select it.

  • Up is unavailable when the selected column is already first in the list. Down is unavailable when the selected column is already the last one you can move.

  • You can move the Date column even though you can't clear it.

  • To apply your column order and selections to your other registers of the same type and display style, click the gear icon at the lower left of the column list and choose the option to make all similar registers match this one. The same menu includes Reset to default columns.

  • This feature is available in non-investment registers only.

Change the name that appears at the top of the register

This is the account name. You can change it by editing the account.

Change the sort order of transactions in the register

Columns in the register are sortable.

  • Click a column heading to sort by that column.

  • Up and down arrows indicate the current sort order.

  • For example, click the Date column heading to sort by date. Transactions are sorted by the entry in their Date fields. If two or more transactions have the same date entry, the deposits appear before the payments. Or click the Clr column heading to list all reconciled (R) transactions first, then transactions you've attempted to reconcile (c), and then all remaining transactions.

  • Move the mouse over the column headings for additional information (flyover help).

  • Other sort options, such as by order entered, are also available. From the account register, click the Account Actions gear icon registergear.png and then choose Sorting options.

Show transactions on one or two lines

  1. Click the Account Actions gear icon registergear.png .

  2. Select (or clear) Use two-line display to change the setting.

Notes

Two-line display affects only the view, not your data.

  • With two-line display off, twice as many transactions display on the screen.

  • Use the Column Selector icon columnselector.png at the top right of the column headings to choose which columns display in one- or two-line mode.

  • Two-line display of investment accounts is covered in a separate topic.

Change the colors used in registers

  1. Choose Edit menu > Preferences.

  2. In the left pane, click Register.

  3. In the right pane, click Colors (Colour in Canada).

  4. Select the colors you want to use in your registers. To return to the default Quicken color setting, choose Restore Defaults.

Notes

The default settings apply the following treatments.

  • Reconciled and cleared transactions appear slightly dimmed.

  • Future transactions are shaded blue.

  • The selected transaction (the transaction you're currently editing) appears more distinct.

You can't customize colors for investment accounts. An investment account transaction list works differently than a register.

Expand or collapse the download transactions panel

You can expand or collapse the download transactions panel in your spending and savings account registers. Click the expand (plus) icon or the collapse (minus) icon on the upper left side of the panel.

Work with multiple registers at the same time (pop-up registers)

  1. Choose Edit menu > Preferences.

  2. In the left pane, click Register.

  3. In the right pane, select Use pop-up registers. If Quicken is configured to start on an account register, the pop-up register option isn't available.

Notes

When you select this option, your registers appear in their own windows, so you can view and work with more than one at the same time.
