Change an income category to an expense category

You can change an income category to an expense category if you accidentally created it in the wrong group or if your financial tracking needs have changed. This action updates how Quicken classifies transactions that use the category.

Use cases

  • You originally created Refunds Received as an income category but now want to track it as a regular expense for audit purposes.

  • You mistakenly entered Property Taxes as income and need to correct it for accurate reporting and budgeting.

To change an income category to an expense category

  1. Choose Tools > Category List.

  2. Right-click the income category you want to change.

  3. Select Edit.

  4. In the Type section, choose Expense.

  5. Click OK.

Changes take effect immediately and apply to all existing transactions using that category. Consider reviewing your reports and budgets after making this change to ensure consistency.
