How do I use the Windows Close Program or Task Manager utility?

Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) programs are applications that are activated when the computer is first started, such as screen savers, antivirus programs, and background utilities. TSRs may divert computer resources that are needed by Quicken, especially on older or less powerful computers.

To exit unresponsive programs as well as unnecessary TSRs:

  • Restart your computer. If you are on a network, don't log on to the network after restarting your computer.
  • Follow the instructions below to use the Task Manager utility.

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
  2. Click the Task Manager button.
  3. Exit a program by selecting it from the list and then clicking the End Task button.

When you exit a program in this manner, you will lose any unsaved information in that program.

  4. Repeat the previous step for each program you want to exit.
