How do I edit a form layout?
After you create a form layout, you can open it at any time and edit it in a number of ways. Click the topic below for the item you want more information about.
Select a layout item on the form
Use this method if the layout item that you want to select is hidden behind another one.
- On the toolbar, choose Item menu > Select Item.
- In the Select Layout Item dialog, in the Item list, select the layout item that you want to work with.
- Click OK. Quicken highlights the selected item in right side of the window.
Display the status of a selected layout item
- On the toolbar, choose Options menu > Show Status.
- In the Selected Item Status dialog, view the name of the selected layout item, its location in relation to the upper-left corner of the Forms Designer's editing window, and its size in pixels.
- To turn off the Selected Item Status dialog, click Show Status again. (Optional)
Add a layout items to the form
Add a new layout item to the form.
- In the navigation menu on the left side of the form layout window, locate the name of the layout item that you want to add. For example, if you want to display a P.O. number on your form, find P.O. Number.
- Click the check box on the left of the layout item’s name. This will add the item to your layout.
Remove a layout item from the form
- In the navigation menu on the left side of the form layout window, locate the name of the layout item that you want to remove. For example, if you don't need to display a P.O. number on your form, find P.O. Number.
- Click to clear the check box to the left of the layout item's name.
Relabel a layout item
- In the navigation menu on the left side of the form layout window, locate the name of the layout item that you want to relabel. For example, if you want to change the label of P.O. Number to Purchase Order, find P.O. Number.
- Click the gear icon to the right of the layout item's name.
- In the Properties dialog for the layout item, enter a new heading and click OK.
- To reset a heading you've changed back to the default, follow the steps above to display the Properties dialog for the layout item in question and then click Default Name. (Optional)
Access all the properties for this form at once
If you'd like to change the headings for several layout items in a form at once, you can access their properties from one dialog.
- In the navigation menu on the left side of the form layout window, locate Invoice Layout, and then click the Properties button (the gear icon to the right of Invoice Layout).
- In the Edit Layout dialog for the form you can:
- Change headings: Enter a new heading in the Name field for a layout item.
- Add or remove layout items: Select the check box next to a layout item to include it in the form, and click to clear the check box to remove a layout item from the form. (If the check box is checked, the layout item is included.) Layout items with disabled check boxes are required for the form you're working on.
- Include your company address: Select Print Company Address to add your company address to your form, and then enter your company address in the field provided.
- Include a logo: Select Print Company Logo to add your company logo to your form. Click Browse and then navigate to the BMP, JPG, or PNG file of your company's logo and click Open. Then choose whether it should appear on the left or right side of the form, and decide whether to use lines or shading.
- Column Header and List: Click on Header Color (Colour in Canada) to choose the color for your invoice headings. Click on Alternate Color’(Colour in Canada) if you want alternate row colors for items in your invoice.
- To reset any headings you've changed back to the default, click Default Names. (Optional)
Position a layout item
- On the right side of the form layout window, click to select the layout item that you want to position on the form.
- On the toolbar, choose Item menu > Position Item.
- In the Position Item in Page dialog, select whether you want the layout item to be justified(in other words, if you want the line endings to align at the right margin.
- Click OK. The layout item that you're positioning won't move vertically if you select Right or Left. Nor will it move horizontally if you select Top or Bottom.
For more flexibility in positioning a layout item, click and drag it to the approximate location, and then select Item menu > Position so you can justify it precisely.
Resize a layout item
- On the right side of the form layout window, click to select the layout item that you want to resize.
- On the toolbar, choose Item menu > Size Item.
- In the Size Layout Item dialog, in the Item to match list, select a different layout item that is already the size you want the first item to be.For example, if you want Due Date to be the same size as P.O. Number, under Item to match select P.O. Number.
- Choose whether you want the first layout item to match the second in height, width, or both.
- Click OK.You can also select the layout item and drag its borders to resize it.
Manually move or resize a layout item
- On the right side of the form layout window, click the layout item that you want to move or resize.
- Select the appropriate option:
- To move the layout item, select the field and move the pointer inside it. When the pointer changes to a four-sided arrow, hold the left mouse button down, move the field to the location you want, and then release the mouse button.
- To resize the layout item, move the pointer to the edge of the side you want to shorten or lengthen. When the pointer changes to a two-sided arrow, hold the left mouse button down, drag the field edge until it is the size you want, and then release the mouse button.
Notes
Manually moving and resizing layout items offers more flexibility than the Size Item dialog or the Position Item in Page dialog. Change the layout item manually first, and then use the dialogs to help you fine-tune your changes.
Align a layout item with another item on the form
You can align two layout items by matching them edge to edge, center to center, or edge to center. You can align the left edges of two layout items so they are aligned vertically, or you can align the top edge of one to the bottom edge of another, and so on.
- On the right side of the form layout window, click the layout item that you want to position on the layout.
- On the toolbar, choose Item menu > Align Item.
- In the Align Layout Item dialog, the name of the layout item that you selected should appear in the Move Item field. Use the radio buttons below to select the part of this layout item that you want to align with some other layout item.For example, if you want to make the left edge of Due Date line up with another layout item, select Left.
- In the Align With field, select a second layout item—the layout item with which you want to align the first item.To continue our example, if you want the left edge of Due Date (by default adjacent to P.O. Number) to line up with a part of the Bill to Address, select Bill to Address from the list under Align with.
- Select the area of the second layout item to which you're aligning the first item.For the final step in our example, select Left to align the left edge of Due Date to the left edge of Bill to Address.
- Click OK.Your move may require two steps, one horizontal and one vertical, to complete. For more flexibility in aligning a layout item, click and drag it to the approximate location, then select Align so you can align it precisely.
Reset one or more layout items to their default values
- On the right side of the form layout window, click the layout item that you want to resize.
- On the toolbar, choose Item menu > Set Defaults.
- In the Set Layout Item Defaults dialog, in the Item to default list, select one or more layout items that you want to reset to default values.Click Select All to select all layout items. Select Clear All to clear all selected layout items.
- In the Settings area, select the properties that you want to reset for the selected layout items.By default, all properties are selected. If you want to retain a change to a property, click to clear the property check box.
- Click OK.
Notes
When you select a layout you created in the Forms Designer, any fields whose labels you change will appear with their new names in the Forms Designer. However, if you move fields in the Forms Designer, such changes won't appear until you print the form.
