Use these steps to correct or update the original starting balance of a non-investment or investment account in Quicken Classic for Windows.
For non-investment accounts
You can edit the opening balance transaction in checking, savings, credit card, and other non-investment accounts directly in the register.
-
In the Account Bar, select the account you want to update.
-
Sort the register by Date to find the earliest transaction.
-
Locate the transaction labeled Opening Balance or the first entry with an initial amount.
-
Edit the Deposit or Payment field.
-
Press Enter or select Save.
Tip: If the opening balance is missing, you can manually insert a new transaction dated before the first downloaded or entered transaction.
For investment accounts
Investment account opening balances are recorded using specific transaction types such as Add Shares or Bought.
-
In the Account Bar, select the investment account you want to update.
-
Sort the transaction list by Date to find the earliest entry.
-
Select the transaction and choose Edit.
-
In the transaction dialog, update the number of shares or dollar amount as needed.
-
Select Enter or Done to save the change.
Note: Make sure you're editing the original opening transaction, not a downloaded activity or placeholder.
