Edit the opening balance of an account

Use these steps to correct or update the original starting balance of a non-investment or investment account in Quicken Classic for Windows.

For non-investment accounts

You can edit the opening balance transaction in checking, savings, credit card, and other non-investment accounts directly in the register.

  1. In the Account Bar, select the account you want to update.

  2. Sort the register by Date to find the earliest transaction.

  3. Locate the transaction labeled Opening Balance or the first entry with an initial amount.

  4. Edit the Deposit or Payment field.

  5. Press Enter or select Save.

Tip: If the opening balance is missing, you can manually insert a new transaction dated before the first downloaded or entered transaction.

For investment accounts

Investment account opening balances are recorded using specific transaction types such as Add Shares or Bought.

  1. In the Account Bar, select the investment account you want to update.

  2. Sort the transaction list by Date to find the earliest entry.

  3. Select the transaction and choose Edit.

  4. In the transaction dialog, update the number of shares or dollar amount as needed.

  5. Select Enter or Done to save the change.

Note: Make sure you're editing the original opening transaction, not a downloaded activity or placeholder.
