Fixing a file access error in Quicken

Quicken displays an access error when it can't read the data file you’re trying to open. This usually means the file is missing, damaged, or stored in a location Quicken can’t reliably access, such as a removable drive or cloud storage folder.

Why this happens

This error is most commonly caused by trying to open a file from a USB drive, external hard drive, or a cloud-synced folder like Dropbox or OneDrive. Quicken requires direct access to your data file, and these types of locations can interfere with that.

What to do

To resolve the issue, move the file to a safe, local location on your computer.

  1. Find the Quicken data file on the external or cloud location.

  2. Move the file to a folder on your local drive, such as Documents or Desktop.

  3. Open Quicken and try to open the file from the new location.

If the problem continues

If moving the file doesn’t resolve the issue, it may be damaged or corrupted. In that case, you’ll need additional help from Quicken Support.
