Rename a budget

Renaming a budget is useful when the purpose or time period of the budget has changed. For example, you may want to rename a past budget to reflect the year it covers or to clarify that it’s no longer active. Renaming helps you stay organized and avoid confusion when managing multiple budgets.

Reasons to rename a budget

Understanding the reasons for renaming—or keeping the name of—a budget can help you decide the best way to organize your financial records.

Why you might rename a budget

Renaming a budget can help make your financial records more meaningful and easier to navigate.

  • To mark an older budget as archived or reference-only

  • To identify the year or purpose (e.g., Vacation 2023 or Monthly Expenses)

  • To avoid having multiple budgets with similar or unclear names

  • To prepare a duplicate budget for a new use while keeping the original label accurate

Why you might not rename a budget

In some cases, keeping the original budget name may be more beneficial than renaming it.

  • You want to keep consistent naming for tracking long-term trends

  • You rely on the current name in saved reports or exports

  • You’ve already created a new budget and want to avoid confusion between versions

How to rename a budget

You can rename a budget from within the budget itself.

  2. In the edit screen type the new name in the Budget Name field.

  3. Press Return to apply the new name.
